Inspiration behind The Pogues 'Fairytale Of New York' explained by Spider

It's not a real bar unless you hear the Irish folk song 'Fairytale of New York' playing from the jukebox sometime during the night this time of year. The inspiration behind the The Pogues Christmas classic, of two lovers bickering from the booze, has now been revealed by guitarist Spider Stacey. In "How We Wrote 'Fairytale Of New York'" Spider explains the song took years to create and began with the banjo player's wife:

"It had a very long and complicated genesis; it was about two years in the making almost, because it went through these various permutations. If my memory serves me right, Marcia – Jem is Marcia’s husband – suggested Jem should write a song about a warring couple."
