In light of MCA passing away, we thought today’s Daily Detour should look at some of our favorite old school Beastie Boys’ interviews.
1) When the Beasties released License to Ill it went straight to number one and a crew of 19 year olds had the top album in the country. They went on the Joan Rivers show for a performance and interview.
2) Riding the success of License to Ill, the Boys set out on a worldwide tour that resulted in many laws being broken, riots breaking out, and Ad-Rock getting arrested. The UK press, surprisingly, greatly exaggerated the Beasties antics and wrote what many say were flat out lies. This pissed off the band, and when they arrived they had a few things to say about it.
3) In 1989 the Beastie Boys had a few years of success and a couple worldwide tours under their belt. One afternoon they appeared on Yo! MTV Raps with Fab 5 Freddy for a tour of New York City. Some people say the band may not have been completey sober during this appearance, but that is for you decide. And how’s Mike D’s outfit??? Sick!
If you like the Silversun Pickups say ‘I’. I. Those of you in the yay category will be happy to hear their new album Neck of the Woods is streaming in full, on the world wide web. Singer Brian Aubert says the album was recorded in the Toganga Canyon woods, and songs are written “like a horror album.’ Spooky. MTV’s Buzzworthy blog has the premiere.
Have a hundred and twenty million dollars to blow? Why not buy The Scream? That’s what some dude did in New York yesterday. The Scream, which was paint din 1895 has actually been stolen three times over the last twenty years. Each time it was found, as I’m sure it’s not easy to unload one of the world’s most expensive works of art. The recent sale of the painting is the largest ever.
And finally, big wave surfer and all-around adventurer Nathan Fletcher is in a new commercial talking about big wave surfing. The soulfulness. The state of being. The mind-body connection.
So what is the commercial for?
Jagermeister of course.
When I’m done surfing the heaviest waves in the world, I need a shot of Jager.
Holy moly did you see these pictures Terry Richardson took of Kate Upton. What a babe, right? But wait… hold on, it comes with video. Kate doing the Cat Daddy. Did you see that? Look at that! I mean, look at that! Whoa.
Nathan Williams of Wavves has been promising a video game from his band for a while now. And guess what? It’s out! The game is similar to the classic Paper Boy, except instead of throwing newspapers you though joints and dodge cops. It’s actually really fun. The game is a co-production with Vice, and live on their site if you want to check it out.
And last but not least, Dave Grohl has announced he is directing a documentary about Sound City. The studio where Nirvana, Guns N Roses, Tom Pretty, Metallica, Fleetwood Mac, and many others have recorded their seminal albums. In a letter Grohl says the doc will cover the last 20 years at the studio and with “Fucking Real.” I’ll watch it. How about you?
Ok that’s all for me have a nice rest of your day. Later.
In summer of 2011 the Tahitian government called a Code Red warning for their coastline. That basically means the waves are too heavy for anyone to go in the water. So naturally the worlds best big wave surfers scrambled to find every jet ski they can and hit the surf. The result is some of the largest, scariest waves ever surfed. And it was all captured in hi-def super slo-mo. The footage has been released by Billabong for a free surf movie titled Code Red. You can find it at that link, on YouTube.
Being the fat-ass that I am, I recently had a weight loss book shipped to me. Sounds ridiculous, but I’m actually enjoying it. It’s called The Drunk Diet: How I Lost 40 Pounds… Wasted. It’s a story of a rock and roll dude who was living the life until pizza and beer turned him into a chubbo. He decided to change his life, and the resulting book is a hilarious, cursing filled tale of learning to love jogging, and enjoying your evenings at the same time. Very Recommended.
And finally… The new Best Coast album has leaked. I’m not going to tell you where you can find The Only Place, but I will tell you that I am very pleasantly surprised with the band’s sophomore album. Their sound has definitely evolved. The title track is my favorite off the album.
This morning I woke up, made a nice cup of coffee, opened my curtains and went – whoa it looks like summer is here. And you know what that means – so much fun stuff to to do and so little time. I like to spend many of my Friday nights at the beach concerts up and down the California coast. After years of careful consideration I’ve narrowed my beach concerts down to three venues. The Del Mar fairgrounds, Santa Monica’s concerts on the pier, and the epic Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk concerts on the bandstand. Have you ever wanted to feel like you’re living in Lost Boy’s the movie? Go to the summer concerts at the Boardwalk. Watch the show from the sand, ride the Giant Dipper, buy a carmel apple, or a gigantic Fosters beer. The boardwalk just released the summer lineup and it kicks off with Warrant. Cherry Pie baby.
Tim Armstrong of Rancid fame is making a musical web show called Rock n Roll Theater. The show stars his friends like Davey Havok, Lars Frederiksen, and others. Tim just released a new single from the show. It’s somewhat of an ode to tinseltown titled ‘Oh Hollywood.’ Check it out on Punknews.org.
And finally, when I’m bored I often stare at GIFs almost lose my mind. I’ve recently found a pretty cool GIF blog called Mr. GIF. The guy has some pretty good style, and I have no idea how he creates have of these suckers. I highly recommend you go check out if you have some spare time.
Ok that is all for me I’m definitely maybe outta here. Have a nice rest of your day. Later.
Harmony Korine promises to “blow some people’s minds” in with his new film Spring Breakers. Korine, who is known for his independent films such as Kids and Gummo, will be directing Vanessa Hudgens and Selena Gomez in a fairly mainstream movie. I really can’t wait to see this one.
I grew up in Northern California where the ocean gets pretty darn cold in the winter. Anyone who’s surfed in water of that temperature knows that ice cream headaches aren’t very fun. I’ve always been pretty sure they kill brain cells. I’ve felt dumber all day after surfing in the morning. I swear. Well, some scientist from Harvard think they have figured out why ice cream headaches happen.
And finally today, if you didn’t already think governments around the world don’t do anything but waste time, here’s the British Parliament listening to Russell Brand quote Tupac on a drug panel
It’s finally here. The long awaited, years in the making, documentary called One Nine Nine Four about punk rock from the nineties is online. The documentary is narrated by Tony Hawk. It covers everything from the emergence of Gilman Street in the Bay Area – with bands like Operation Ivy, Green Day, and NOFX – to the Southern California scene with Bad Religion, Pennywise, Blink-182, and more. Exclusive interviews with Fat Mike, Billy Joe, Tom Delonge, Greg Graffin, and Tim Armstrong – they’re all there. The film is on YouTube right now. I’d go search around YouTube and try to find it while you can. Who knows how long it will be up.
If you’ve ever cruised around the New York City subway system you know it’s like one giant, functional work of dirty art. But have you ever really looked at the Metro Cards? They’re kind of generic, right? Well one N-Y-C artist has taken it upon herself the redesign the card. In fact, she made 20 different cards based on different districts of the city. And many of the cards are designed with real food – like the Meatpacking district. That’s burger right there. Or how about Little Italy. Yum.
And finally, now there are some pretty scary things that come out of New Jersey. Like the 108 toxic waste dumps, the most of any state. And did you know it’s the car theft capital of the world? The entire world! But I think I have found the scariest thing ever to come from New Jersey. This creepy Psychedelic anti-marijuana PSA.
Whoa. Stay away from the pot.
Ok that’s all for me. Have a nice rest of the day. Later.
Mick Boogie is back with a new mixtape. This time he’s covering the Beastie Boys and it’s titled called Grand Royal.
- As you probably know, I’m a huge baseball fan. Huge fan. Love playing it, watching it, and talking it. Also love to hear other peoples thoughts on the game. This week Rolling Stone gathered a few rock stars and had them offer up their favorite baseball movies. Guys like Alice Cooper, George Thorogood, Ben Gibbard, Tom Morello and more.
- And last but not least, when I’m bored I often spend my time checking out all the cool stuff being created on Kickstarter Recently I found something that will make my bike riding by the beach a lot nicer. A small bluetooth speaker that attaches wherever you like on your bicycle.
Tom DeLonge has hinted that he will be moving full speed ahead with Angels and Airwaves in the next year or two. Does that mean Blink-182 will take a back seat? Only time will tell!
The 70s and 80s generated some golden skateboarding artwork by guys like Duane Peters, Steve Caballero, the Z-boys, and the bones brigade. And now some iPhone cases straight out of Gleaming The Cube are available. They’re crafted out of aircraft grade aluminum and have interchangeable backplates. Grab yourself a Hosoi, Vato Rat or Ripper case and be stoked. There’s only one problem with these cases. They cost $150 bucks! Jeez.
And finally, you know those moments when you’ve gone out, hit up the bars, killed it at pool, made tons of funny jokes, all the babes love you, and you actually even brought one home? Here’s something that will help you seal the deal. Star Wars condoms! Nothings sexier that looking at a little yoda head right? Hey baby want to see my Storm Trooper. You call me Luke Skywalker and I’ll call you Jabba the Slut.
